Profil
Issu de l'union d'un père chirurgien et d'une mère médecin, Alain Weill évite la carrière médicale pour s'intéresser au commerce. Il étudie à L'Institut Supérieur des Affaires, du groupe HEC et obtient son MBA.
Passionné par l'entreprenariat, il crée sa société de conseil en audiovisuel, WRMC, en 1984. Suite à une candidature spontanée, il est recruté par la toute jeune radio NRJ en 1985 pour développer le réseau. Il sera directeur de 1985 et 1989 et aidera grandement NRJ à se développer. C'est Jean-Paul Baudecroux qui le repère à l'époque. Tout au long de sa carrière, cet homme l'aidera à franchir les échelons.
Puis, il occupe le poste de directeur général de Quarare (Groupe Sodexho) de 1989 à 1990. En 1990, il devient attaché de direction générale à la Compagnie Luxembourgeoise de Télédiffusion (CLT). Il retourne vers les médias, une nouvelle fois par Jean-Paul Baudecroux. Il se rapproche ainsi de RTL dès 1990, avant de prendre les rênes en 1992 de la radio Maxximum qui deviendra M 40. En 1992, il devient administrateur et directeur général de groupe radiophonique NRJ Group (NRJ, Chérie FM, Nostalgie, Rire et Chansons...), puis président directeur général de NRJ Régie en 1995 et enfin vice-président du directoire NRJ Group en 1997 (et bras droit de Jean-Paul Baudecroux). Alain Weill se fait connaître des milieux financiers ou ses qualités de gestionnaire sont réputées. En 1998, il devient président du Syndicat indépendant des régies de radios privées (SIRRP).
En 2000, Alain Weill quitte NRJ et son mentor. Il n'a pas choisi ce départ. En 2000, le groupe NRJ est intéressé par le rachat de la radio RMC. Cette dernière a une audience en chute libre mais avec une image de marque toujours forte. NRJ se propose donc d'acquérir la radio. Mais une réglementation interdit à l'époque à un seul groupe de détenir plus de 150 millions d'auditeurs potentiels. NRJ ne peut acquérir RMC.
De nouveaux acquéreurs sont alors recherchés. Un fond d'investissement se dit très intéressé, le fond Alpha, mais ce dernier souhaite un manager. Alpha demande Alain Weill. Il hésite entre une carrière toute tracée dans un groupe installé comme NRJ ou développer sa propre radio. Il finira par choisir cette deuxième option. Alpha détient alors 65% des 83,3% détenus par Pierre Fabre, et Alain Weill 35%. Monaco conservera le solde. Les actionnaires d'NRJ n'apprécient pas ce départ et le cours du titre chute brutalement le jour même.
En 2000, Alain Weill crée Nextradio (dont il prend la présidence du directoire).
Alain Weill modifie radicalement la thématique de la radio. RMC abandonne le généraliste et devient spécialisée sur l'information, le débat et le sport. Quelques années plus tard, le pari est gagné. RMC s'affiche en forte croissance et l'audience est au rendez-vous. Homme de coups, il obtiendra aussi les droits de rediffusion exclusifs lors des coupes du monde de football et de rugby.
Sa réussite au sein de RMC lui donne une réputation de repreneur d'entreprises. Il acquiert ainsi la radio BFM alors en liquidation judiciaire en 2002 et licencie une très grande partie du personnel en recentrant l'activité sur l'économie.
Le 9 mai 2005, le CSA retient la candidature de son projet de chaîne d'information en continu à vocation économique BFM TV dans le cadre de l'appel aux candidatures lancé le 14 décembre 2004 relatif à l'attribution des licences de TNT. La chaîne est officiellement lancée le 28 novembre 2005 à 18h.
NextRadio devient alors NextRadioTV monté avec le soutien du Baron Ernest-Antoine Seillière. Alain Weill est PDG et actionnaire à 36% de ce groupe détenant deux radios (RMC et BFM) et une chaîne de télévision (BFM TV).
Alain Weill se fait une nouvelle fois remarquer en rachetant un groupe en méforme, le groupe Tests. Ce dernier détient des marques comme 01 Informatique, Micro Hebdo, et le site 01net.com
En 2008, il rachète le quotidien économique "La Tribune" à l'homme d'affaires Bernard Arnault.
C'est en 2008 également qu'Alain Weill avec Michel Moulin (ancien conseiller sportif du PSG et directeur général du groupe Hersant) lancent un quotidien sportif, le « 10 sport », pour concurrencer l'Equipe.
