Albert Frère est sans doute le plus français des hommes d'affaires de Belgique, où sont cotées ses sociétés d'investissement Groupe Bruxelles-Lambert (GBL) et Compagnie nationale à portefeuille (CNP). Il a débuté dans la commercialisation de produits en acier. Grâce à sa « cooptation » par la banque Paribas, Frère devient sidérurgiste dans les années 60. Et saura sortir de cette activité juste avant qu'elle ne connaisse la crise des années 80. Bref, Albert Frère sait quoi acheter, et aussi quand le vendre.
Puis celui que l'on surnomme « le fils du marchand de clous » en référence à son premier métier se voue à l'investissement. A cette fin, il se sert d'une cascade de holdings, à commencer par CNP. Mais Albert Frère étant un homme de réseaux, il n'agit pas seul : depuis 30 ans, il est allié avec le québécois Paul Desmarais, qui comme lui a fait fortune en partant de pas grand' chose. Ensemble, les deux hommes ont pris en 1982 le contrôle de la holding GBL, qu'ils n'ont pas lâché depuis.
Selon la légende, ils parlent affaires quotidiennement, et jamais une décision d'investissement n'est prise s'ils n'en sont pas tous deux convaincus. Présidée par Frère, GBL est la principale holding : en Bourse de Bruxelles, GBL vaut 12,5 milliards d'euros, contre 5,2 milliards pour CNP.
Des décisions, MM. Frère et Desmarais en ont pris un certain nombre. GBL a poussé des entreprises belges à se rapprocher de groupes étrangers. Ainsi, GBL a cédé ses parts dans la pétrolière belge Petrofina au français Total, et procédé de même avec l'électricien Electrabel au profit de Suez. GBL s'est aussi invité chez Lafarge, Imerys, Iberdrola... Aujourd'hui, GBL détient principalement des actions d'entreprises françaises du CAC 40, dont Albert Frère est le premier investisseur privé. Avec un certain succès : selon nos calculs, son retour sur investissement dépasse les 10% l'an au cours de la dernière décennie.
Investisseur avisé, Albert Frère s'appuie sur un carnet d'adresses des plus fournis. D'ailleurs, le roi des Belges Baudouin Ier l'a fait baron en 1994, et le président Nicolas Sarkozy l'a décoré en février dernier de la Grand Croix de la Légion d'honneur.
