En 2009, alors que tout le monde la pensait proche de la retraite, Carol Bartz devient PDG de Yahoo Inc.
Diplômée en informatique de l'université de Wisconsin, Carol Bartz s'oriente vers les entreprises laboratoires, celles qui prennent part à l'informatique du futur. Après un passage dans la société 3M, elle intègre des entreprises à la pointe dans leur domaine tels que Cisco Systems, NetApp, Intel Corporation ou encore Sun Microsystems dont elle a été la vice-présidente. Elle conserve un siège dans les conseils d'administrations de la majorité des entreprises où elle a opéré.
En 1992, elle est recrutée par Autodesk, éditeur de logiciels pour PC. Son expérience et sa méthode lui permettent de transformer en 20 ans, une entreprise navigant à vue en un chef de file de la conception assistée par ordinateur. Sous sa houlette, les recherches sont encouragées et Autodesk développe des produits pointus destinés notamment aux cabinets d'architectes.
En 2006, elle quitte sa fonction à la direction d'Autodesk, tout en conservant la présidence exécutive du conseil d'administration. Sa mission est alors largement accomplie, puisque de 300 millions de chiffres d'affaires annuel réalisés en 1992, Autodesk est passé à 1,5 milliards en 2005.
Le 13 Janvier 2009, Carol Bartz est nommée PDG de Yahoo Inc. Elle remplace le co-fondateur Jerry Yang poussé vers la sortie par des actionnaires mécontents de son refus de l'offre de rachat de Microsoft. Sa mission est titanesque : redonner de l'aplomb à Yahoo laminé par Google sur les publicités en ligne, mettre en place un partenariat avec Microsoft qui permette de revaloriser les actifs sans se faire dévorer, et restructurer des équipes qui ont perdu leur capacité à innover laissant le champs libre au géant de Mountain View.
Le 7 septembre 2011, Carol Bartz est limogée de Yahoo! Scott Thomson a été nommé nouveau directeur général de Yahoo le 4 Janvier 2012.
