Breton d’origine, François Pinault est né à Champs Géraux dans les Côtes-d'Armor. Son père tient une scierie dans laquelle il va travailler à 16 ans avant de s’engager quatre ans plus tard dans les troupes françaises en Algérie de 1956 à 1958. De retour d’Algérie, il retourne travailler dans l’entreprise familiale avant que son père ne meure en 1959. Après avoir vendu la société familiale, il devient chef d’exploitation Gauthier Frères avant de la racheter avec l’aide du Crédit Lyonnais et de son beau-père.
En 1962, il fonde le Groupe Pinault, qui deviendra progressivement un acteur important du bois et des matériaux de construction.
Toutefois, en 1970, sous pression du Crédit Lyonnais, il se voit contraint de se séparer de son activité et de vendre son entreprise à la Holding Britannique Venesta International. Avec une partie des fonds perçus par cette vente, il spécule sur les prix du sucre et fait fortune à la suite de l'envolée des cours. Cela lui permet de reprendre Pinault SA à Venesta qui est en faillite.
Lors de la première crise pétrolière il aura une merveilleuse intuition en sentant que la crise menace le secteur du bois. Il se rend donc chez tous ses fournisseurs et résilie ses contrats d’importation en s'acquittant des frais d'annulation. Les cours s’effondrent et ses concurrents se retrouvent avec des engagements qu’ils ne peuvent pas honorer. Il peut ainsi racheter ses concurrents en faillite.
En 1988, Pinault SA fait son entrée sur le Second marché de la Bourse de Paris. Deux ans plus tard, la société se lance dans la distribution spécialisée en rachetant Conforama, Le Printemps, La Redoute, et la Fnac. Quelques années plus tard, le groupe se lance dans le luxe et en 1999, il remporte Gucci face à Bernard Arnault, qui devient son ennemi juré. Créé en 1992, son holding Artémis mène aussi des opérations "coup de poing" sur les marchés, comme sur les "junk bonds" américains. Son fils François-Henri Pinault, marié à l'actrice Salma Hayek, est depuis 2003 le PDG du groupe PPR, rebaptisé depuis Kering.
