Homme le plus riche de Grande Bretagne, sixième plus grosse fortune au monde selon le classement Forbes 2011, le magnat de l'acier Lakshmi Mittal, CEO de Arcelor-Mittal, affiche une réussite éclatante bâtie grâce à un flair qui a permis de transformer en 30 ans la petite aciérie indienne héritée de son père, en numéro 1 mondial de l'acier.
Diplômé de l'école de commerce de Calcutta en 1969, Lakshmi Niwas fait ses armes chez Ispat Industries, une aciérie dont son père est associé. Lorsqu'en 1976, sa famille crée ses propres aciéries, il est en charge du développement international.
Soucieux de prouver ses qualités de manager à son père, il crée sa propre société et rachète des entreprises publiques affaiblies ou en faillite. Mais c'est à la fin des années quatre-vingts que "l'homme de fer de Calcutta" a l'occasion de montrer son savoir faire en sauvant de la faillite une usine sidérurgique de Trinidad et Tobago. En quelques années, Lakshmi Mittal multiplie ses acquisitions en achetant un réseau de producteurs en acier dans d'anciens pays communistes comprenant le Kazakhstan, la Roumanie et l'Ukraine.
Dans les années quatre-vingts dix, il traque sans relâche les opportunités dans le monde entier avec une stratégie invariable : acquérir des affaires à faible valeur et les développer. Obsédé par la rationalisation des dépenses, Mittal s'affirme comme un manager sans concessions, employé à réduire les couts là où ils peuvent l'être.
La fusion du groupe Mittal avec l'américain ISG (International Steel Group) en octobre 2004 fait du nouveau groupe Mittal Steel le premier producteur mondial d'acier. Le 27 janvier 2006 Mittal lance une OPA hostile sur Arcelor. Après avoir revalorisé son offre, Mittal conclut la fusion et Lakshmi prend la tête du nouveau géant de l'acier.
Au cours des cinq dernières années, Lakshmi Mittal, a procédé à plus de vingt opérations de rachat, souvent des entreprises en difficulté qu'il a restructurés. Sa fortune est estimée par le magazine Forbes à 45 milliards de dollars.
