Philippe Joffard est le président de Lafuma depuis 24 ans maintenant. Il est le petit fils d'un des trois frères Lafuma, fondateurs de l'entreprise en 1930. Dans les années 50, l'entreprise bénéficie des trente Glorieuses, des premiers congés payés et de l'avènement de l'ère des loisirs.
Depuis tout petit, Philippe Joffard baigne dans l'esprit Lafuma. Pour autant, il n'exprime pas une ambition dévorante et n'envisage pas, une fois ses études terminées, de travailler au sein de l'entreprise familiale drômoise.
Titulaire d'une maitrise de droit et d'un DEA en sciences politiques, le lyonnais devenu parisien, s'intéresse d'abord au journalisme. Sans grande conviction. En 1983, il collabore avec Yves Bossard au sein du Groupe Bossard. Il y apprend les bases de la gestion entrepreneuriale.
Il garde tout de même un œil sur la société familiale, dans la mesure où il représente sa mère au conseil d'administration depuis 1982. En 1984, inquiet de la stratégie adoptée par le groupe et suite aux conseils avisés de son patron, Yves Bossard, il se décide à intégrer la société familiale Lafuma en tant que directeur délégué.
En février 1986, il devient Président Directeur Général de Lafuma SA. Le groupe traverse alors une période difficile. Il met en place des plans de restructuration, mais doit finalement déposer le bilan.
A la base, Lafuma fabrique des sacs à dos et du mobilier de camping. Progressivement et sous l'impulsion de Philippe Joffard, le groupe se redéploye en entamant une stratégie de diversification et en favorisant le design. Lafuma devient alors un acteur incontournable de l'outdoor.
Trois phases majeures de développement sont à distinguer :
De 1985 à 1995, le groupe comprend l'intérêt de s'étendre à l'international. En 1986, une partie de la production est délocalisée en Tunisie et le fameux cartable d'écolier est vendu en grande distribution. En 1987, Lafuma ouvre son capital à Axa et Siparex.
De 1995 à 2005, Lafuma élargit son offre de produits et mise sur des opérations de croissance externe. Il rachète Millet en dépôt de bilan, Le Chameau (fabricant de bottes en caoutchouc) puis Oxbow en 2005.
Le spécialiste drômois des équipements de loisirs avait déjà renforcé son pôle mobilier de camping et son positionnement à l'international en réalisant, en 2001, l'acquisition de 85% de la société familiale Lallemand puis, en 2002, en acquérant la totalité du capital de la société allemande Big Pack GmbH basée dans la région de Stuttgart.
L'entreprise est introduite en Bourse au second marché d'Euronext à Paris en 1997.
Aujourd'hui, le groupe structure son activité autour de quatre grandes pôles : Lafuma (pôle outdoor/style de vie), Millet et Eider (pôle montagne), Le Chameau (pôle équitation, chasse, pêche) et Oxbow (pôle glisse, ski, surf). A ces marques s'ajoute Ober.
Lafuma se focalise sur la consolidation de son réseau en favorisant une croissance mondiale. En 2006, le groupe a fêté l'ouverture de ses premières boutiques Lafuma en Asie. Lafuma a également repris la marque allemande Georg Schumacher (équitation), Bishoes (tongs) et en 2008 Eider (vêtements de montagne).
