Thierry Breton est né le 15 janvier 1955 à Paris. C’est un dirigeant d'entreprise, administrateur de sociétés et homme politique français.
Il obtient, en 1979, son diplôme d'ingénieur de l'école supérieure d'électricité (Supélec). Il est également diplômé de l'institut des hautes études de défense nationale (IHEDN).
Thierry Breton débute sa carrière en 1979 comme professeur d'informatique et de mathématiques au lycée français de New York, dans le cadre de son service national au titre de la coopération.
Puis, il crée "Forma Systems", une société spécialisée en ingénierie informatique.
Il en quittera cependant la présidence en 1986 pour se consacrer au projet de création du Futuroscope jusqu’en 1990.
De 1990 à 1993, il devient directeur général du groupe CGI, société d’analyse de systèmes et d’ingénierie informatique.
En 1993, Thierry Breton entre chez Bull comme directeur de la stratégie pour repositionner les activités du groupe. Il en est devenu directeur général et vice-président du conseil d’administration jusqu’en 1997.
Entre 1997 et 2002, il est nommé président directeur général de Thomson, tout en occupant les fonctions de directeur de la recherche de l’entreprise, de 1997 à 2002.
Son rôle est d’opérer pour le groupe un repositionnement autour des nouvelles technologies de l'image et d'Internet. En 2001, il est élu par La Tribune "Stratège de l'année" pour sa gestion de Thomson. En septembre 2002, il sera nommé président d'honneur de la société à la suite de son départ pour France Télécom.
Thierry Breton est nommé président directeur général de France Télécom de 2002 à 2005, période durant laquelle il a réorienté la stratégie de l’entreprise sur la convergence fixe-mobile-internet et augmenté significativement le nombre de brevets déposés par l’entreprise. Durant cette période, le chiffre d’affaires de France Telecom a sensiblement augmenté tandis que la dette a décru de moitié.
Il sera nommé ministre de l’Économie, des Finances et de l’Industrie française de 2005 à 2007. Son action se concentra sur la réduction de la dette publique et sur l’investissement dans de nouveaux territoires de croissance.
En 2008, Thierry Breton est nommé président du directoire d’Atos, puis président directeur général en février 2009. Il est chargé de conduire la transformation du groupe pour améliorer sa performance opérationnelle et donner un nouveau souffle à l’innovation. Il mène également à bien l’acquisition de Siemens IT Solutions & Services en juillet 2011, donnant naissance à un nouveau champion mondial des services informatiques, puis celle de Bull et de Xerox ITO en 2014 et 2015. Grâce à ces opérations, le groupe Atos est entré au CAC40 en 2017.
Classé deux années de suite (2017 et 2018) parmi les 100 patrons les plus performants au monde selon le classement de la Harvard Business Review, Thierry Breton a reçu de nombreuses distinctions durant sa carrière.
