Lawrence (Larry) Ellison est le fondateur de la société de logiciels « Oracle Corporation » qui emploie aujourd'hui plus de 40000 personnes dans le monde, avec un chiffre d'affaires annuel de 9,5 milliards de dollars. Ellison, qui possède 26% de parts dans Oracle, est l'homme le plus riche de Californie et cinquième fortune mondiale dans le classement Forbes 2011.
En 1966, Ellison s'installe à Berkeley, en Californie. Il occupe différents postes dans l'informatique, principalement à la sauvegarde de données. Ellison continue à travailler avec des ordinateurs et s'initie à la programmation sur des machines IBM. C'est chez Ampex, une des nombreuses sociétés où il fait escale qu'Ellison rencontre Robert Miner et Edward Oates, avec qui il crée Oracle. Ensemble, ils se voient confier une mission d'envergure, concevoir la base de données de la CIA.
En 1977, persuadés que les bases de données peuvent être perfectionnées, les trois complices additionnent leurs talents pour tenter de créer la base de donnée idéale, celle qui peu afficher une capacité de stockage et une rapidité de fonctionnement supérieures à toutes les autres. Il fonde la société Software Development Laboratories qui devient deux ans plus tard RSI (Relational Software, Inc).
En 1982, l'entreprise emploie plusieurs dizaines de personnes réalisant un chiffre d'affaires de 2,4 millions de dollars. Grâce au marketing agressif mené par Ellison, ce chiffre est doublé chaque année avec une pointe à 55 millions de dollars quatre plus tard. En 1983 RSI devient Oracle corporation.
En 1986, Oracle fait ses débuts à Wall Street à l'ombre du géant Microsoft. La base de données conçue par Oracle séduit un nombre grandissant de clients comme des centrales de réservations, des chaines de magasins et des gros industriels en quête d'un outil de gestion performant.
Dans les années quatre-vingt dix, Oracle progresse tellement vite qu'elle est quasiment hors de contrôle. Ellison ayant peu d'expérience dans la gestion de ce niveau là s'attire les foudres de la SEC, l'autorité de régulation des marchés américaine, qui lui reproche de déclarer des recettes fictives et le contraint à ne comptabiliser que ce qui a été réellement encaissé. Acculé, Ellison se résout à faire appel à un directeur financier rompu à la gestion de la haute finance.
En 1997, Ellison élargit son champs d'action dans les logiciels d'application comme les logiciels de facturation et les outils bureautiques.
En 2003,Oracle lance une offre hostile sur son principal rival PeopleSoft, dirigé par Craig Conway, un ancien d'Oracle mais le département de la Justice donne un avis défavorable. En janvier 2004, Ellison démissionne de la présidence d'Oracle mais reste chef de la direction de l'entreprise. Il détient aujourd'hui 1,3 milliards d'actions dans l'entreprise.
