Charles Edelstenne est Président de Dassault Systèmes et directeur général de Dassault SAS (le Industriel Marcel Dassault, GIMD) depuis la mort de Serge Dassault en 2018.
Né le 9 janvier 1938 à Paris, il suit de études d’expert-comptable. À 21 ans, Charles Edelstenne, tout juste, vient de terminer son service militaire au Maroc. C’est alors qu’il entre, en 1960, dans la société Avions Marcel Dassault-Bréguet Aviation comme chef des services financiers. Pierre François, le secrétaire général, lui confie d’abord les études financières, avant d’en faire son adjoint. Il devient à son tour Secrétaire général en 1975.
En 1981, grâce à son implication dans le dossier relatif à la nationalisation de Dassault Aviation, chère au président de la République de l’époque, François Mitterrand, Charles Edelstenne gagne définitivement la confiance de Marcel Dassault, âgé alors de 93 ans. Hélas Marcel Dassault n’aura pas le temps de le nommer Vice-président. Son décès, un an plus tard, déclenche une guerre de succession entre la famille et l’Etat actionnaire. L’Etat, toujours actionnaire de Dassault Aviation, tente en effet d’imposer à la tête de l’entreprise Bruno Revellin-Falco.
Mais Serge Dassault, le fils de Marcel Dassault, parvient à prendre la direction du groupe en octobre 1986. Charles Edelstenne, très proche de l’héritier des Dassault, devient vice-président.
Entre-temps, Charles Edelstenne a développé et investi dans Dassault Systèmes, entreprise d’équipements technologiques embarqués. Ses parts investies au capital de l’entreprise contribuent à forger sa grande fortune 40 ans plus tard. Il en assure la direction générale jusqu’en 1993, puis, lorsque l’entreprise devient société anonyme, la présidence et la direction générale. Il n'est plus que Président du CA depuis 2002.
Charles Edelstenne est ensuite parallèlement nommé PDG en 2000 de Dassault Aviation, remplaçant Serge Dassault qui avait atteint la limite d’âge. Au fil des années, il impose sa stratégie et notamment sa volonté de développer des avions à forte valeur ajoutée, comme le jet privé Falcon 7X, au lieu d’avions d’entrée de gamme.
Il devient également Président du GIFAS en 2005, le Groupement des industries françaises aéronautiques et spatiales, et ce jusqu’au 2009.
Il demeure PDG de Dassault Aviation jusqu’en 2013, date à laquelle la relève est assurée par Eric Trappier, du fait de son âge (75 ans).
Il est également administrateur chez Thalès.
Il compte aujourd’hui, selon le magazine Challenge, parmi les 100 plus grandes fortunes françaises.
Réputé rugueux et redoutable en affaires et en gestion, il est craint et respecté par la profession. Sa position de PDG par intérim du groupe GIMD doit permettre d’assurer la passation de l’empire avec les héritiers de Serge Dassault.
