Classé 136ème fortune mondiale avec 7 milliards de dollars par Forbes en 2011, Charles (Charlie) Ergen est le fondateur et le p-dg d'Echostar, société spécialisée dans le secteur des télécommunications. La société et ses filiales proposent des produits et services DBS (Direct Broadcast Satellite) et comprend trois divisions : DISH Network, EchoStar Technologies Corporation et EchoStar Satellite Services.
Détenteur d'un MBA de la Wake Forest University, Charles Ergen débute sa carrière en tant qu'analyste financier pour Frito Lay, une branche de Pepsico Inc. En 1980, il fonde Echostar. A ses débuts, la société fournit des bandes de diffusion aux médias avant d'obtenir en 1992 la licence nécessaire à l'exploitation d'un satellite.
En novembre 1994, Charles Ergen décide la construction d'un centre de transmission satellite à Cheyenne. En 1995, il lance avec succès Echostar, son premier satellite. Dans la foulée, Charles Ergen crée Dish Network, une branche destinée à commercialiser la télévision par satellite. En mars 1996, le centre de transmission DISH Network diffuse ses premiers programmes. Un an plus tard, un deuxième satellite Echostar est lancé.
En 1998, Charles Ergen rachète les actifs de la société de radiodiffusion par satellite News Corporation ASkyB et MCI Worldcom. Avec cette acquisition, EchoStar, a plus que doublé sa capacité de diffusion aux États-Unis.
En Janvier 2005, EchoStar rachète les actifs de radiodiffusion de Voom, une société spécialisée dans la TVHD par satellite.
Début 2008, Charles Ergen restructure EchoStar en deux entreprises distinctes : Dish Network Corporation et EchoStar Broadcasting Corporation. DISH Network Corporation, cette dernière, se focalise sur la commercialisation aux États-Unis de la télévision par satellite, tandis que EchoStar Corporation gère une majorité de la flotte de satellites et d'autres infrastructures.
Grâce à DISH Network, EchoStar Communications Corporation est devenue l'un des leaders de services de télévision par satellite aux États-Unis, elle diffuse ses programmes auprès de plus de 11 millions de clients.
