Né en 1967, en Allemagne et élevé à Foster City, en Californie, Peter Thiel, l'étudiant en philosophie de Stanford, a été greffier et a pratiqué le Droit avant de fonder, en 1996, le Thiel Capital Management, un fond à multi stratégies.
En 1999, « PAT » co-fonde Paypal. Initialement conçu pour effectuer des transferts d'argent entre PDA, le service de paiement en ligne Paypal connaît un rapide succès grâce à une première incursion chez eBay. En moins d'un an, 3 millions de comptes Paypal sont ouverts via le site d'enchères en ligne. La société Paypal est officiellement créée en 2001 et côtée en bourse en 2002 où l'action gagnera plus de 50% le premier jour. La même année, eBay achète Paypal pour 1,5 milliard de dollars. Peter Thiel empochera 55 millions de dollars.
Clarium Capital Management, qui gère près de 3 milliards de dollars, est créé à la suite de cette vente, et se voit désigné 3 ans plus tard comme « fond global macro de l'année » par deux magazines spécialisés.
Peter Thiel a toujours cru à l'essor de la bulle internet. Slide, LinkedIn, Friendster, Palantir Technologies... Furent les premières start-up à bénéficier des investissements de l'ancien juriste.
En 2004, Chris Hughes, Dustin Moskowitz et Mark Zuckerberg, trois étudiants d'Harvard lancent Facebook et sollicitent Peter Thiel, qui investira 500 000 dollars dans le projet, par le biais de Founders Fund, autre fond dont il est associé.
Le site de mise en réseau est aujourd'hui valorisé près d'un milliard de dollars.
Outre les Echecs, Peter Thiel écrit (co-auteur d'un livre sur le multiculturalisme à Stanford et plusieurs articles dans la presse financière entre autre). Il a par ailleurs coproduit « Thank You for Smoking ». Une comédie qui raconte les tentatives de Nick Naylor (incarné par Aaron Eckhart), lobbyiste de charme au service de Big Tobacco, pour contrer les ravages de la politique de prévention contre le tabagisme. Membre du Singularity Institute for Artificial Intelligence, partie prenante dans une société de recherches de technologies visant à augmenter la durée de vie, Peter Thiel a enfin un avis très tranché sur un certain nombre de sujets.
En août dernier, alors qu'il était invité du TechCrunch50 de Michael Arrington à San Franciso, il avait en substance expliqué que pour lui un CEO de startup ne devrait pas gagner plus de 120 000 dollars par an.
