Pendant son séjour à Simpson Thacher, Schnitzer a été le principal avocat extérieur de Travelers Companies.
Alan Schnitzer rejoint Travelers Companies en 2007 en tant que vice-président du conseil et chef des affaires juridiques. Il siège depuis aux comités de gestion et d’exploitation de la société. A ce titre, il supervise les fonctions juridiques, les relations publiques et les affaires gouvernementales de la société.
Par la suite, il dirige le secteur Assurances financières, professionnelles et internationales de la société. Schnitzer joue un rôle déterminant dans le repositionnement des activités internationales de la société, notamment grâce à la présence accrue de Travelers Companies en Amérique du Sud et au Canada. En 2013, sous la direction de Schnitzer, Travelers acquiert la compagnie d'assurance générale canadienne Dominion.
