William Henry Gates III dit Bill Gates est un pionnier de la micro-informatique. En 1973, Gates entre à l'Université d'Harvard à l'âge de 18 ans. Il y rencontre Steve Ballmer, futur PDG de Microsoft, et abandonne rapidement ses études pour se consacrer uniquement à la programmation informatique. Il fonde à 20 ans avec un autre de ses amis, Paul Allen, la société de logiciels Microcomputer Software devenu ensuite Micro-Soft (le trait d'union a depuis disparu).
La co-réalisation par Gates et Allen d'un interpréteur pour l'Altair 8800 marque une étape dans l'histoire de la micro-informatique, car il s'agit du premier langage de programmation à fonctionner sur un micro-ordinateur commercial.
IBM souhaitant commercialiser ses propres ordinateurs, passe un accord avec Microsoft pour que Gates et Allen réalisent leur système d'exploitation.
Microsoft achète alors le système d'exploitation QDOS pour en faire MS-DOS, puis conçoit Windows, tous deux en situation de quasi-monopole mondial.
L'obtention de l'autorisation de vendre son système d'exploitation à de nombreux fabricants d'ordinateurs qui copient le PC d'IBM est une formidable opportunité.
Le succès de Microsoft provient de sa capacité à faire évoluer son système d'exploitation et sa gamme de logiciels bureautiques Microsoft Office, traitement de texte, tableur, base de donnée, utilitaires, jeux, au même rythme que l'évolution technologique des micro-ordinateurs.
L'explosion du parc informatique et la présence quasi-obligatoire de Windows sur chaque machine fera le reste.
En 1986, Microsoft fait son entrée en Bourse. Les investisseurs l'accueillent avec enthousiasme : le jour même, Gates devient milliardaire.
Il devient, grâce au succès commercial de Microsoft, un des hommes les plus riches du monde de 1996 à 2007 avec une fortune personnelle estimée à plus de 56 milliards de dollars en 2011. Il est Chevalier de l'Empire Britannique en 2005. Bill Gates quitte Microsoft le 27 juin 2008 pour se consacrer à sa fondation humanitaire.
Bill gates a lancé avec Warren Buffett en juillet 2010 l'opération « Giving Pledge » (« Promesse de dons »), pour inciter les milliardaires à léguer au moins la moitié de leur fortune à des œuvres charitables. Le groupe compte en 2011 soixante membres tous basés aux Etats-Unis.
