Jean-Sébastien Jacques est un grand patron né en octobre 1971 qui est citoyen britannique. Il a fréquenté le lycée Louis-le-Grand à Paris, puis a étudié l'ingénierie à l'École Centrale de Paris. Ce Centralien ambitieux n’hésite pas à démarrer sa carrière en s’expatriant : il travaille ainsi pendant plus de15 ans en Europe, en Asie du Sud-Est, en Inde et aux États-Unis dans le cadre de vastes programmes opérationnels.
Il occupe alors des postes dans les industries de l'aluminium, de la bauxite et de l'acier. Entre 2007 et 2011, il met ses compétences au service de la stratégie de l'aciériste indien Tala Steel.
En 2011, Jean-Sébastien Jacques rejoint Rio Tinto - le géant minier australo-britannique - où il commence au sein de la division Cuivre, dont il prend la direction générale en 2013. Il devient alors membre du Comité exécutif du Groupe. Il s’illustre en intervenant - entre autres - dans le dossier "Turquoise Hill" ; une mine de cuivre géante située en Mongolie (à Oyu Tolgoï) dont il obtient l’extension alors que le projet était au point mort depuis des années à cause d’un désaccord financier avec le gouvernement Mongol.
Jean-Sébastien Jacques prend ensuite, en 2015, la direction de la division Charbon de Rio Tinto.
Il développe au fil de sa carrière de solides compétences et une grande expertise dans la conduite de projets d’envergures mondiales. Il est aussi très respecté pour son leadership au sein de l'industrie minière alors qu’il se trouve confronté à de fréquents problèmes géopolitiques et économiques.
C’est ainsi qu’en 2016, alors que le Président Directeur Général Australien du Groupe Rio Tinto, Sam Walsh, fait valoir ses droits à la retraite, Jean-Sébastien Jacques est choisi pour le remplacer.
Il se retrouve ainsi à la tête du deuxième groupe minier au monde. Sa mission est cependant loin d’être une promenade de santé car il prend son poste alors que le prix des matières premières s’effondre et que la demande chinoise ralentit, mettant les comptes du groupe dans le rouge depuis 2015.
Outre sa fonction de PDG et cette lourde tâche de redresser le groupe Rio Tinto, Jean-Sébastien Jacques est membre du conseil d'administration du Conseil international des mines et des métaux. Il a également été président entre 2014 et 2016, de l’Association Internationale du cuivre. Il a enfin siégé aux conseils d’administration de la Turquoise Hill Resources Limited, de Palabora Mining Company Limited et de Bougainville Copper Limited.
