Louis Gerstner est connu pour avoir "sauvé" l'entreprise International Business Machines Corporation (IBM). Il a obtenu un baccalauréat en ingénierie au Dartmouth College en 1963. Il intègre ensuite la Harvard Business School et obtient, en 1965, une maîtrise en administration des affaires. La même année, il entre chez McKinsey & Company en tant que consultant.
En 1978, Louis Gerstner rejoint American Express en tant que vice-président exécutif de la division cartes de paiement. En 1981, il est promu président du groupe Voyage services connexes. Trois ans plus tard, il devient président de la société mère. Malgré tous ces succès, Gerstner a le sentiment d'atteindre un plafond de verre chez American Express et quitte le navire.
En 1996, il devient président de RJR Nabisco. RJR fut un important conglomérat américain formé en 1985 par la fusion des sociétés Nabisco et R.J. Reynolds Industries. Ce groupe fut racheté à la fin des années 1980 par le fonds d'investissement KKR, puis une fois séparé de ses activités de fabricant et de distributeur de cigarettes, par la société américaine Kraft Foods en 2000.
En avril 1993, Louis Gerstner arrive chez IBM. A l'époque la société connait des difficultés. Louis Gerstner prend les choses en main et met en place une stratégie de recentrage des activités. Il mise sur les activités de service informatique et sur l'e-business. Certains attribuent même ce néologisme à Louis Gerstner. Il entend également faire revivre la culture d'entreprise. De nombreux licenciements sont décidés, des mesures de gestion délicates sont mises en place mais au final la société est sauvée. Il prend sa retraite de PDG et de Président en 2002.
Après son départ d'IBM, Gerstner reçoit un contrat de consultant d'un montant de 2 millions de dollars par an valable pendant 10 ans. A cela s'ajoutent, les frais et la pleine utilisation des installations et services IBM, tels que bureaux, voitures, avions, ...
Partisan d'une école de qualité, il crée en 2003 la Commission d'enseignement et élabore des recommandations spécifiques pour faire face à la crise de l'éducation en Amérique. En Janvier 2003, il occupe le poste de président du Groupe Carlyle, une société d'investissement américaine fondée en 1987 et située à Washington. Ce fonds de private equity est présent dans de nombreux domaines d'activités, comme la défense, l'énergie, l'aéronautique, l'industrie automobile et des transports. Il se retire de ce poste en octobre 2008 mais demeure le conseiller principal du Groupe Carlyle. Carlyle n'est pas coté en Bourse.
Louis Gerstner est membre du conseil consultatif de Sony Corporation. Il a également siégé au sein des conseils d'administration du New York Times, d'American Express, d'AT&T, de Caterpillar, de Melville et a été Président du Conseil de DaimlerChrysler.
