Né le 13 février 1966 à Chicago (Illinois), Mark Jonathan Pincus a vécu sa jeunesse dans plusieurs grandes métropoles américaines (Philadelphie, Denver, Boston, Washington D.C). Il mène des études de sciences économiques à l’université de Pennsylvanie, avant de débuter sa carrière au sein du cabinet d’analystes Lazard Frères, puis rejoins Asian Capital Partners, fonds d'investissement à Hong Kong.
Mais cet homme de taille modeste (1,65 m) décide de retourner parfaire sa formation avec un MBA, qu’il suivra à la prestigieuse Harvard Business School. C’est en 1995 que Mark Pincus crée sa première start-up, Freeloader, qu’il revendra quelques années plus tard, 29 millions de dollars. Il lance une deuxième société en 1997, Support.com, avant de se lancer dans les réseaux sociaux avec Tribe.net en 2003.
Marié à Alison Pincus, fondatrice du site d’achats groupés One Kings Lane, ce père de jumelles fonde Zynga en 2007 avec Scott Sale, John Doerr et Kyle Stewart et devient le PDG.Le succès fut immédiat.
Amateur des paysages du Colorado, où il possède une ferme, Mark Pincus est parfois critiqué pour ses méthodes de management. Selon le site Glassdoor.com, qui permet à chaque salarié de noter sa propre entreprise, Zynga atteint tout juste la moyenne en matière d’environnement de travail.
La société de jeux web 2.0 sur réseaux sociaux axe essentiellement son modèle économique sur les revenus issus de la vente de biens virtuels (94% des revenus au premier trimestre 2011) et sur la publicité. Les jeux les plus populaires ont pour nom Farmville, CityVille, MafiaWars et Texas Hold Em Poker. Les widgets interactifs de Zynga ont réellement décollé lorsqu’ils furent disponibles sur Facebook, au point d’en devenir dépendant pour générer du trafic.
Accessibles gratuitement dans un premier temps, les jeux de Zynga deviennent progressivement payants à mesure que le joueur avance dans le jeu. Mark Pincus a même créé une monnaie virtuelle (zCoins).
Après plusieurs mois de préparation, l’éditeur de jeux amorce, fin 2011, un virage décisif en créant sa propre plateforme. Baptisé « Projet Z », ce site communautaire axé sur les jeux permet aux utilisateurs de nouer des relations directes avec d'autres joueurs, sans passer par Facebook.
La fin 2011 a été également marquée par l’introduction en Bourse de Zynga. Très attendue en pleine crise mondiale de la dette, l’opération a rencontré un succès mitigé. L’IPO du groupe de Mark Pincus s’est imposée comme la deuxième plus grosse introduction en Bourse pour une valeur Internet, après Google en 2004.
Les 100 millions de titres (10 dollars) émis sur le marché trouveront rapidement preneurs, permettant au groupe de lever 1 milliard de dollars. Un pactole qui doit permettre à Zynga de conquérir son indépendance.
