Actuel Maire de New York, Michael Bloomberg est aussi fondateur et propriétaire à 88% de Bloomberg LP, une société de services destinés aux professionnels des marchés financiers. Une carrière qui détonne pour celui qui occupe la 30ème place dans le classement Forbes 2011 et dont la fortune est évaluée à 18,1 milliards de dollars.
Diplômé en sciences en 1964, Michael Bloomberg décroche un MBA à la Harvard Business School. Sa carrière d'homme d'affaires est lancée lorsqu'il s'associe à la banque d'investissement Salomon Brothers, dont il dirige les ventes, et plus tard, le développement des systèmes.
En 1981, Michael Bloomberg est licencié de Salomon Brothers, ses indemnités de départ, qui s'élèvent à 10 millions de dollars, sont immédiatement investies dans la création de Innovative Market Systems, une société de services financiers.
En 1986, la société a été rebaptisée Bloomberg LP. Initialement axée sur l'exploitation d'une base de données historiques sur les courbes de taux des emprunts d'État du Trésor américain, la société a peu à peu enrichi son offre de services aux professionnels en s'ouvrant à l'information économique et financière aussi bien en tant qu'agence de presse que par le biais de nombreux médias : télévision, radio, presse, internet et livres.
En 2008, le groupe Bloomberg LP emploie plus de 10 000 employés répartis dans plus de 130 pays.
En 2001, Michael Bloomberg, soucieux d'éviter les primaires démocrates, choisit de se présenter à l'élection du maire de New York pour le Parti républicain. Il consacre 70 millions de dollars de sa fortune personnelle pour faire campagne et remporte l'élection en novembre 2001 avec 50% des voix contre 48% au démocrate Mark Green.
Le 8 novembre 2005, Michael Bloomberg est réélu pour un second mandat de quatre ans à la tête de la mairie avec 59% des voix contre 41% à Fernando Ferrer. Cette fois-ci, se sont 50 millions de dollars qui sont investis de sa poche.
