Michael Ringier est le représentant de la cinquième génération du groupe de média suisse Ringier, basé à Zurich. Cette maison familiale fut fondée il y a cent soixante-quinze ans à Zofingue, par Johann Rudolf Ringier.
Michael Ringier possède, avec ses deux sœurs Evelyne et Annette, la totalité du capital. Il préside le groupe seul depuis 1991. De 1985 à 1991 Il partageait la présidence avec son frère Christophe mais un différend stratégique les a opposé. Christophe désirait conquérir le marché américain, mais leur père, Hans Ringier, a tranché en faveur de Michael, et le groupe s'est désengagé de l'Allemagne.
Journaliste de formation, Michael Ringier est attaché au capitalisme familial et ne conçoit pas une seule seconde ne détenir qu'une partie du capital et se battre contre les financiers pour garder le contrôle du groupe. L'empire emploie 7 500 salariés dans douze pays en Europe et en Asie, édite plus de 120 journaux (Blick, Le Temps en Suisse…) et magazines (L'illustré, L'Hebdo…), produit une vingtaine d'émissions de télévision, contrôle 50 sites Internet et 12 imprimeries.
Et pourtant, la crise n'a pas épargné le groupe suisse en 2009. Celui-ci a vu son chiffre d'affaires reculer de 15,6% à 858,4 millions d'euros. Le groupe avait en effet profité de la chute du mur de Berlin pour mettre le cap sur l'Europe de l'Est et s'implanter en Roumanie, en République tchèque, en Hongrie, en Serbie et en Slovaquie. Si l'empire Ringier s'étend en Europe de l'Est et en Asie, l'essentiel de son chiffre d'affaire est réalisé en Suisse.
Par contre, l'intérêt du dirigeant pour le business français reste limité, Michael Ringier a tenté l'expérience en France (il était, il y a vingt ans, actionnaire du Point) mais ses diverses initiatives n'ont pas porté leurs fruits.
Michael Ringier mise sur une nouvelle organisation centralisée rassemblant 200 journalistes. Ceux-ci travaillent en équipes et produisent ensemble des contenus pour la marque unique Blick. Cette marque regroupe quatre titres : le tabloïd populaire phare de Ringier, l'hebdomadaire du dimanche SonntagsBlick, le gratuit qui sort le soir Blick am Abend, et le site blick.ch.
