Principal dirigeant et actionnaire d'Iliad, la société mère du fournisseur d'accès Internet Free, Xavier Niel traine une réputation de trublion de l'internet en France. Avec 150,2 millions d'euros de résultat net et une progression de 29,7% en 2007, l'homme était classé 8ème plus grosse fortune de France par le magazine Forbes en 2011.
Après des études courtes, Xavier Niel abandonne sa prepa en maths sup' pour se lancer dans le minitel rose. Il crée et gère lui-même des serveurs, ce qui lui permet de se constituer rapidement une petite fortune. Cette activité dans le réseau de charme collera à l'homme une image sulfureuse qui lui vaut d'être accusé de proxénétisme aggravé avant de bénéficier d'un non-lieu en 2007.
En 1993, il fonde Worldnet, le premier fournisseur d'accès Internet en France qu'il revendra en 2000. En 1997, il a l'idée de lancer 3617 Annu, un annuaire inversé qui connait un succès immédiat.
En 1999, il créé Free, un fournisseur d'accès à Internet. En 2002, Free lance un pack internet à des prix défiants toutes concurrences (29.99 € par mois).Ce pack deviendra rapidement le produit phare de la société. Par la suite Free lance la Freebox ; un modem proposant des offres triple-play.
Avec ses deux complices, Olivier Rosenfeld, le directeur financier et Michael Boukobza, directeur général d'Iliad, Xavier Niel décide l'introduction en bourse de Free en 2004. En 2005, Iliad-Free affiche une capitalisation de 2,3 milliards d'euros.
Alors que la stratégie des fournisseurs internet privilégie les acquisitions et les fusions, Xavier Niel ne jure que par là croissance interne. En 2008, il a la possibilité de racheter Alice ADSL, il hésite puis finit par saisir l'occasion qui lui permet de reprendre 954 000 abonnés du fournisseur Internet. Il devient numéro deux du marché devant Neuf-SFR. Désormais Alice-Free détiennent 26 % de parts de marché.
En janvier 2008, Free obtient enfin la licence de téléphonie mobile 3G tant attendue, même si cette dernière est restrictive puisque limitée à 10 millions d'abonnés.
Le 10 Janvier 2012, Free a lancé ses offres en téléphonie mobile, des offres inédites, à des prix dérisoires et sans engagement (forfait illimité à 19.99 €).
