Il vit d'abord dans l'est des Etats-Unis, puis va en Californie étudier à l'université de Claremont. En 1969, il obtient son MBA à l'université de Columbia, puis intègre la banque d'affaires Bear Stearns, en même temps qu'un de ses cousins, George R Roberts. Tous les deux travaillent sous les ordres de Jerome Kohlberg Jr, responsable corporate finance.
Kohlberg est un précurseur dans les acquisitions "Bootstrap". Il recherche des petites entreprises sous-évaluées, ou des entités de grands groupes souffrant du même problème, puis aide l'équipe managériale à racheter l'entreprise.
En 1976, devant le refus de Bear Stearns de financer certains de ses projets, Kohlberg démissionne et part avec Henry R Kravis et George R Roberts. Ensemble, ils créent une firme d'investissement qui deviendra l'une des plus célèbres des Etats-Unis "Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & co", alias KKR.
Au cours des six années qui suivent, Henry Kravis crée une série de partenariats pour racheter des entreprises, les réorganiser (licenciements, réduction des coûts, etc), céder certains des actifs non productifs ou des filiales avant de revendre l'entreprise à un prix supérieur à celui auquel elle avait été rachetée.
Généralement, KKR utilisait dans l'opération de rachat ses fonds propres pour 10 % du prix d'achat, et empruntait le reste, notamment par émission des fameux "Junk Bonds".
A.J.Industries, Lily-Tulip, et Houdaille Industries furent quelques unes des acquisitions par emprunt (LBO) de la fin des années 70, et du début des années 80, que KKR réalisa. Houdaille fut la première grande compagnie, cotée à la bourse de New-York, à être rachetée par LBO. Au cours de ces années, les revenus de KKR avoisinaient les 50 millions de dollars par an.
En 1984, KKR réalisa son premier LBO supérieur à un milliard de dollars. Il s'agissait du rachat de la société Wometco. KKR reprit la société Amstar, pour 450 millions de dollars avant de la revendre pour 700 millions en 1986.
En 1987, Jerome Kohlberg démissionna de KKR, et Henry Kravis lui succéda comme associé senior.
En 1988, KKR prit le contrôle de RJR Nabisco (géant du tabac et de l'agro-alimentaire à l'époque la 19ème entreprise américaine) pour 25 milliards de dollars, presque le double du record mondial précédent pour le rachat d'une entreprise commerciale. La publicité autour de ce qui était à l'époque le plus grand deal financier de l'histoire donna même lieu à plusieurs films. La publicité donnée à l'opération transforma instantanément Henry Kravis et son cousin George Roberts en vedettes dépassant le seul cercle des initiés du monde de la finance.
Depuis sa création KKR a réalisé des opérations de rachat pour plus de 73 milliards de dollars concernant 45 entreprises. Parmi les entreprises rachetées ou cédées par Kravis et ses associés, on trouve des noms tels que Texaco, Gillette, Playtex, Samsonite, etc. Henry Kravis est maintenant membre du conseil d'administration de nombreuses entreprises (American-Re, Duracell, UnionTexasPetroleum...)
Au cours des dernières années, le bilan de sa firme a été plus mitigé, certaines opérations s'avérant fructueuses alors que d'autres se sont achevées par des pertes. La firme est toujours étroitement contrôlée par Kravis et Roberts, et a ouvert un bureau londonien. Toutefois, elle a perdu nombre de ses associés, parmi lesquels beaucoup de ceux qui firent sa réputation dans les années 80.
La fortune de Kravis est estimée à 5,5 milliards de dollars faisant de lui le 107ème américain le plus riche.
