Hiroshi Mikitani est le fondateur et PDG de Rakuten ("optimisme" en japonais), dont il détient toujours 20% du capital.
Hiroshi Mikitani est diplômé de l'Université Hitotsubashi. En 1998, il débute sa carrière en rejoignant la banque d'affaire Mizuho Bank. Il reprend finalement ses études et passe un MBA à Harvard qu'il obtient en 1991. Hiroshi Mikitani connaissait déjà bien les Etats-Unis, son père était professeur d'économie à l'université de Yale, il y avait donc passé une partie de son enfance.
Il retourne chez Mizuho Bank pour une durée de quatre ans. Il quitte la banque pour lancer sa propre société de consulting, Crimson Group. En 1997, alors que le Japon ne compte que 5 millions d'internautes, il décide de lancer un centre commercial virtuel qu'il baptise Mdm Rakuten Shopping Mall. Peu nombreux sont ceux à croire à ce projet, persuadés que l'e-commerce ne fonctionnera jamais au Japon. Grosse erreur, en 2010 Rakuten compte 64 millions de membres, rien qu'au Japon !
Cette galerie commerciale virtuelle vend 58 millions de produits proposés par plus de 30 000 professionnels. Sur Rakuten, vous pouvez acheter des vêtements, des produits d'équipements de la maison, des montres et même des œufs frais. Rakuten est parmi le top 10 des plus grandes sociétés Internet dans le monde.
Le plus jeune millionnaire du pays a bâti en quinze ans un groupe qui pèse aujourd'hui 32 milliards de dollars et qui est présent dans de nombreux secteurs : la banque et l'assurance en ligne, les voyages, les médias et bien sûr l'e-commerce. A 46 ans, Hiroshi Mikitani était selon le classement Forbes 2011, la 182ème fortune mondiale avec 5,6 milliards de dollars et le cinquième homme le plus riche du Japon.
Rakuten est cotée à la Bourse de Tokyo et emploie plus de 3 000 employés. La société est aujourd'hui valorisée à hauteur de 850 milliards de yens (7,5 milliards d'euros). En plein développement, l'entreprise a multiplié les rachats afin de s'imposer à l'international, notamment en juin 2010 où Hiroshi Mikitani, et a racheté au français Pierre Kosciusko-Morizet 100% du capital de PriceMinister pour 200 millions d'euros.
