Il anime également de nombreuses émissions de télévision consacrées à la finance sur diverses chaines américaines et enseigne l'économie à l'université de Columbia.
Avec un diplôme de Yale University en poche, Jim Rogers, après un passage dans l'armée américaine, décroche en 1964 son premier boulot à Wall Street. Six ans plus tard, il rejoint la société de conseil et d'investissement Arnhold & S. Bleichroederen. C'est là qu'il rencontre George Soros avec qui il crée le célèbre fond d'investissement Quantum Fund, resté dans les mémoires comme le fond d'investissement qui a été capable de progresser de 4200 % en dix ans.
A 37 ans, Jim Rogers prend sa retraite. Il accepte un poste de professeur de finance à la Columbia University School of Business et continue de gérer son propre portefeuille.
En 1998, il fonde Rogers International Commodity Index ( RICI ), un index pour les matières premières qui fait aujourd'hui autorité.
Passionné de deux roues, Jim Rogers entame en 1990 un tour du monde en moto qui durera pendant deux ans. Il parcourt plus de 160.000 kilomètres, une performance qui lui vaut de figurer dans le Guinness Book des records. Il profite de ses voyages pour analyser les possibilités d'investissement dans chaque pays parcouru. Ces analyses, il les rassemble dans les nombreux ouvrages qu'il a publiés.
