A sa manière, Keith Rupert Murdoch est un héritier. Son père, le patron de presse australien Keith Murdoch, meurt en 1952. Alors étudiant à Oxford, en Angleterre, son fils Rupert rentre aux pays l'année suivante et prend la direction du holding familial News Limited : avec la maison de famille, c'est tout ce qui reste de l'empire une fois les dettes payées.
Dans ses bagages, Rupert Murdoch ramène les recettes du vicomte anglais Northcliffe : au tournant des XIX et XXèmes siècles, cet ancien pigiste avait racheté des journaux au bord de la faillite, comme The Evening News, et lancé des titres comme le Daily Mail ou le Mirror. Il a su faire de cette presse « tabloid » des journaux rentables en misant sur une large diffusion populaire.
Murdoch fait de même en Australie, rachetant et créant de nombreux titres. Fort de ses succès australiens, il les répète au Royaume-Uni à partir de 1968 en rachetant les « tabloïds » News of the World et le Sun, puis le journal conservateur The Times en 1981. Dès cette époque, Rupert l'Australien pousse ses journaux à soutenir la politique de Margaret Thatcher. Au milieu des années 70, il étend son empire de presse aux Etats-Unis avec des « tabloids » comme Star, le New York Post...
Puis il se lance dans la télévision : Murdoch rachète une des premières chaîne satellites anglaise en 1982, formant ce qui deviendra le bouquet satellite Sky TV. En 1990, Sky se débarrasse de la concurrence en rachetant BSB, formant le groupe BSkyB. Et Murdoch lance aux Etats-Unis les chaînes Fox, qui apportent leur soutien aux candidats républicains, avant de s'implanter en Asie avec Star TV.
A partir de 2004, le siège de ce qui est devenu News Corp quitte l'Australie pour les Etats-Unis. Selon certains courtiers, c'est en partie car son groupe, coté en Bourse, serait mieux valorisé sur les marchés US. Murdoch est aussi devenu citoyen américain.
Magnat des médias, en 2007 il a acheté le groupe de presse dont dépend le Wall Street Journal. En 2011, il est confronté à un scandale sans précédent en Angleterre : des journalistes de News of the World ont mené des écoutes illégales. Cette affaire le contraint à fermer le journal et à se justifier devant les parlementaires britanniques.
Selon Forbes, en 2011, Rupert Murdoch était le 122ème homme le plus riche au monde avec une fortune estimée à plus de 7,6 milliards de dollars.
