Lorsque le père Ambani décède en 2002, il lègue à ses deux enfants un empire qu'il a bâti en important la fibre synthétique qui remplacera le coton dans diverses industries. L'héritage sera partagé entre ses deux fils, Anil et Mukesh Ambani. Au premier, reviendra la grande distribution et l'industrie pétrochimique et au deuxième les branches télécom, divertissement et énergie.
Depuis, une guerre fait rage entre les frères ennemis qui se disputent encore l'héritage et rivalisent de coups, chacun voulant être plus riche que l'autre. Au Classement Forbes de 2011, Anil est à la 103éme place.
Avec un Master en gestion des affaires obtenu à la Wharton School de l'université de Pennsylvanie, la même qui avait accueilli Warren Buffett quelques décennies auparavant, Anil Ambani fonde Anil Dhirubhai Ambani Group qui englobe Reliance Communications, Reliance Capital, Reliance Energy et Reliance Natural Resources Limited.
Anil est passionné par l'entertainment. Marié à une star de Bollywood des années 80, il consacre de plus en plus d'investissements, avec une idée en tête : la conquête d'Hollywood. Il réalise un de ces meilleurs coups le 20 septembre 2008 en investissant 220 millions de dollars dans Dreamworks, la maison de production de Steven Spielberg.
Mais l'indian tycoon, qui a réussi à augmenter son capital de 24 milliards de dollars en un an, est aussi celui qui a le plus perdu en 2008. Une somme colossale de 30 milliards de dollars est partie en fumée.
