Michael Dell est le fondateur de Dell Inc, le deuxième plus grand fabricant d'ordinateurs au monde. Avec un patrimoine net d'environ 14,6 milliards de dollars, le milliardaire texan est classé 44ème homme le plus riche du monde selon Forbes 2011.
Préparant son diplôme de physique à l'Université du Texas d'Austin. Michael Dell consacre tout son temps à la création de PC's Limited , une société informatique qui, pour réduire les coûts, ne fait que des ordinateurs sur-mesure. En 2004, il crée la société Dell avec 1000 dollars en poche.
Soucieux de rationaliser ses dépenses au maximum, Michael Dell met sur pied une stratégie innovante qui permet, en assemblant des ordinateurs personnalisés et sur commande, d'éviter la gestion de stocks coûteux et inutiles. Le concept fait mouche et en 1987, Michael Dell quitte les études pour se consacrer au lancement de Dell Computer Corporation. Avec un chiffre d'affaires de 35 milliards de dollars et 2 milliards de dollars de profits réalisés en 2002, Dell dégage des marges qui font pâlir d'envie les plus gros producteurs de PC.
En 2004, Michael Dell abandonne son fauteuil de PDG à Kevin Rollins mais reste Président du Conseil d'administration.
Profitant du boom d'internet, Dell réalise près de 50 % de son activité en ligne. Chaque jour, ce sont quelques 40 millions de dollars qui sont générés sur Internet.
Mais en 2007, Dell accumule les difficultés, les délais de livraisons ne sont plus garantis, le fabricant se voit contraint de rappeler près de 4,2 millions de batteries défectueuses et pour couronner le tout, HP, le principal concurrent de Dell, lui chipe la première place. Michael Dell débarque Kevin Rollins et reprend les choses en main.
Le fondateur de la firme texane parvient à remettre Dell dans le sens de la marche mais a néanmoins vu sa fortune passer en 2008 de 16,4 à 12,3 milliards, plombé par la crise et la dégringolade du cours des actions Dell.
A l'instar de Bill Gates, Michael Dell a créé "Michael and Susan Dell Foundation", une fondation engagée dans le domaine de l'éducation et de la santé.
