Mr. Smitherman joined American Capital in April 2006, bringing investing and acquisition experience in the enterprise infrastructure, communications, networking and electronics sectors.
Mr. Smitherman has served on over 25 boards including Broadvision, Topspin Communications, XIOtech, Advanced Radio Telecom, Connexn, Combinet, and Redfern Integrated Optics.
Prior to joining American Capital, he was for eight years a partner at Advent International, a $10 billion global private equity firm.
He also served on the investment committee of TMT Ventures, a venture fund focused on the communications, technology, e-commerce and media sectors.
Before joining Advent, Mr. Smitherman spent nine years with Ameritech Development in its venture capital and acquisition group.
Mr. Smitherman received a BSE in aerospace engineering, summa cum laude, from the University of Michigan and an MBA from the University of Chicago.
