Nathaniel Rothschild est un des héritiers de la branche anglaise de la famille Rothschild. Il est le plus jeune des quatre enfants et le seul fils de Jacob Rothschild, 4ème Baron Rothschild et Serena Mary Dunn, dont le grand-père était le financier canadien et industriel, Sir James Dunn.
Formé à Colet Cour, Eton College et à Oxford, dans le très prestigieux Wadham College, Nathaniel est devenu un protagoniste chevronné de la finance et de l'industrie.
Nathaniel Rothschild a commencé sa carrière à Londres en 1994 chez Lazard Frères. De 1996 à 2009, il a été coprésident d'Atticus Capital, une société globale de gestion activiste dont il détenait la moitié des parts. En 2000, il jette son dévolu sur le Groupe André. Ce fonds s'est également rendu célèbre en entrant au capital de Deutsche Börse. Au sommet de sa gloire, le fonds affichait 11,5 milliards de dollars d'actifs sous gestion.
Il détient en direct 2,7% de RIT Capital Partners, une société de portefeuille cotée à Londres, qui pèse 2,6 milliards de dollars d'actifs. Son père, lord Jacob Rothschild, en est le président et sa famille en détient au total près de 25%.
Nathaniel Rothschild possède sa structure d'investissement, NR Investments. Il détient aussi une firme régulée de conseil, JNR, qui a été sélectionnée par Rusal pour l'assister dans son introduction en Bourse. Une opération à laquelle il a aussi contribué en tant qu'investisseur.
Homme très discret à l'allure juvénile, le président de NR Investments a abandonné l'activisme actionnarial et se consacre à plein-temps à la gestion de ses placements personnels avec une petite équipe de collaborateurs. Il investit majoritairement dans les matières premières et les métaux précieux. Il a intégré le conseil d'administration du leader mondial de l'or, le canadien Barrick Gold.
Hors matières premières, Nathaniel Rothschild a pris 11% du capital de BR Properties, un groupe immobilier brésilien formé en 2006. Depuis mars 2009, il détient 26,5% de Volex Group Plc, un spécialiste de la fibre optique coté à Londres. Il mène des projets dans l'immobilier en Ukraine et en Roumanie, ainsi qu'un projet de construction d'une marina de luxe au Monténégro dont le Groupe Arnault est également actionnaire.
Il parie sur les marchés émergents, même s'il demeure fidèle au marché américain qui offre à ses yeux les meilleures opportunités de placement. En outre, l'héritier affirme s'engager directement et pour longtemps dans la vie des entreprises dont il est actionnaire. Il est favorable au système français. Pour lui, donner aux actionnaires stables davantage de droits de vote qu'aux traders qui jouent le court terme est une bonne solution qui devrait s'appliquer au Royaume-Uni.
Attara Capital est le fonds héritier d'Atticus Europe. Nathaniel Rothschild y occupe une place moins opérationnelle mais affirme son plein engagement. David Slager, un investisseur de Wall Street que Nathaniel Rothschild avait débauché en 1998 de Goldman Sachs pour rejoindre Atticus, en est le véritable inspirateur et détient la majorité des parts.
