Troisième homme le plus riche du continent africain et 310ème fortune mondiale selon le classement Forbes 2011, Naguib Sawiris dirigeait jusqu'en 2011 le géant égyptien de téléphonie mobile Orascom Telecom Holding (OTH). Un groupe qui compte plus de 50 millions d'abonnés, essentiellement en Afrique, au Moyen-Orient et en Asie du Sud. Orascom Telecom Holding est une des filiales du groupe Orascom fondé en 1950 par Onsi Sawiris, le père de Naguib. Un conglomérat égyptien détenant des intérêts dans la construction, le tourisme, les technologies et les télécommunications.
Diplômé en génie mécanique de Swiss Federal Polytechnical Institute. Naguib Sawiris rejoint Orascom en 1979. Il a alors le projet de mener l'expansion du groupe en s'appuyant sur les pays émergents, vivier foisonnant de nouveaux clients notamment pour les télécoms. Un choix avisé qui permet a OTH de rivaliser aujourd'hui avec les plus grands opérateurs de téléphonie dans le monde.
En 1998, Naguib Sawiris lance Mobinil, un opérateur de téléphonie mobile qui devient rapidement leader en Égypte. En 2008, alors que Mobinil célèbre son 20 millionième abonné, la cour d'arbitrage de la Chambre de Commerce international place l'opérateur égyptien sous contrôle de France Telecom, actionnaire à 78% de Mobinil.
En 2002, le pharaon des télécoms tel qu'on le surnomme, crée Djezzy, une société de téléphonie de droit algérien. Tout comme Mobinil, Djezzy parvient rapidement à être leader en Algérie avec plus de 13 millions d'abonnés conquis en 2007.
En 2005, Naguib Sawiris fonde Weather Investments, un outil d'investissement qui détient 50% + 1 part de Orascom Telecom Holding et achète dans la foulée Wind, troisième opérateur mobile italien, franchissant du coup le cap des 50 millions d'abonnés.
En 2007, Weather Investments acquiert l'opérateur mobile grec TIM Hellas.
En 2010, sa société Orasom Development Holding finance majoritairement la construction des hôtels de luxe Cheval Blanc au large d'Oman et en Egypte de Bernard Arnault.
En 2011, Orascom a été cédé au groupe russe Vimpelcom. Le groupe est désormais dirigé par Khaled Bichara.
