Yves Guillemot est le co-fondateur de la société d'édition de jeux vidéo, Ubisoft, avec ses frères Claude, Michel, Gérard et Christian. Il en est l'actuel PDG.
Après un bac scientifique, il intègre l'IPME, l'institut de la PME. Deux de ses frères s'inscrivent à l'EDHEC (Écoles des hautes études commerciales), un autre opte pour l'EBS (European Business School) et le dernier choisit de suivre le cursus universitaire d'économie de la faculté de Rennes…C'est dire si le commerce est une histoire de famille !
Ses parents tiennent un magasin de produits pour l'agriculture dans le Morbihan. Adolescent, il travaille pour l'entreprise et se familiarise à toutes les facettes du métier. Il découvre la gestion, la comptabilité, la manutention et livre même les sacs d'engrais aux clients.
Dans les années 80, les frères tentent leur chance dans la vente d'ordinateurs tout en restant liés à l'activité familiale : ils commercialisent des logiciels destinés à informatiser les fermes et fondent Guillemot Informatique dans leur ville d'origine, Carentoir dans le Morbihan.
A la fin de ses études, Yves effectue un stage en Californie, mais ses frères lui conseillent de rentrer en France. Le secteur du divertissement est en plein essor et la fratrie est bien décidée à surfer sur cette vague prometteuse. Ses deux frères aînés créent un magasin d'informatique, Guillemot Software et Yves s'y associe. Au début, ils misent sur l'importation de jeux vidéo, puis ils investissent dans l'édition.
Bénéficiant de l'explosion fulgurante du secteur, leur business fleurit et atteint très vite une taille importante. Les frères Guillemot fondent ensuite Guillemot Corporation (conception et fabrication de matériel informatique), Ubisoft en 1986 (édition de jeux vidéo), Ludiwap, Gameloft en 1999 (jeux pour téléphones mobiles) puis Guillemot Ventures.
Les frères privilégient l'entente familiale et, afin de limiter les contentieux, décident de se partager les directions des cinq sociétés. Claude est le PDG Guillemot Corporation, Michel de Gameloft, Gérard de Longtail Studios, Yves d'Ubisoft et Christian de Guillemot Venture et d'AMA (Advanced mobile applications) crée en 2004.
L'homme d'affaires, réputé pour être très discret s'est pourtant largement démarqué en faisant croitre rapidement Ubisoft, au point d'en faire un acteur incontournable du secteur de l'édition des jeux vidéo. Grace à des jeux comme Rayman, Prince of Persia ou les lapins crétins, Ubisoft est devenu le numéro un français, le numéro deux européen et le troisième éditeur indépendant mondial. Ubisoft est cotée en Bourse, tout comme Gameloft.
Ubisoft possède vingt cinq studios de développement internes à la société un peu partout sur la planète. Yves Guillemot passe donc son temps entre Shanghai, Casablanca, Milan, Barcelone, Bucarest, Montpellier, Singapour ou encore Sao Paulo. Ubisoft Montréal, créé en 1997, est le plus important studio. C'est ici que des bestsellers comme Prince of Persia ou Assassin's Creed ont vu le jour.
