David Einhorm est diplomé de l'université Cornell (New York) où il a obtenu une distinction dans toutes les disciplines en 1991. Il est le patron de Greenlight Capital, un fonds spéculatif qui a démarré en 1996 avec un million de dollars en poche et disposerait en 2008 de 6 milliards de dollars.
Généralement short-seller, la stratégie du fond est payante puisque sa rentabilité s'est élevée à 26 % par an depuis 1996.
Le nom de David Einhorm est étroitement associé à la vente à découvert. S'il se présente surtout comme un investisseur de long terme, l'homme est d'abord adulé par ses pairs pour ses offensives éclair, ses fameuses spéculations à la baisse.
Ces deux principaux faits d'armes sont Allied Capital et Lehman Brothers
En 2002, lors d'une conférence en faveur d'une institution charitable organisée par Tomorrows Children's Fund, David Einhorn présente Allied capital comme une opportunité à vendre. Alors qu'un nombre conséquent d'indices tendent à prouver ses dires, Allied Capital va se déchaîner contre son accusateur et au combat technique qui s'engage vont s'ajouter des coups tordus (enquête de la SEC sur Eindhorn lui-même, licenciement de sa femme de son poste chez Barron's, vol d'enregistrements téléphoniques…). Einhorn écrira un livre au sujet de cette affaire : « Fooling some of the people all the time ».
En 2007, il repère avant tout le monde le piteux état de Lehman Brothers et alors que les autres hedge funds font dans la discrétion, lui prise les micros.
En mai 2008, toujours lors d'une soirée de charité, Einhorn lance une diatribe contre la banque d'affaires accusée de masquer la vérité sur ses comptes. Quelques jours plus tard le titre dévisse. Et Einhorn s'enrichit d'un milliard d'euros. Sans états d'âme.
Quand ses détracteurs l'accusent de précipiter la mort de ses proies, de faire du business sur des ambulances, lui se présente comme un militant pour la transparence financière
Einhorn est également le président de Greenlight Capital Re, Ltd, basée dans les îles Caïmans, spécialisé dans la réassurance et dont il est l'un des principaux actionnaires.
