Profil
Né à Oslo, fils d'un soudeur, John Fredriksen débuta sa carrière en tant que stagiaire dans une compagnie de commerce maritime. A l'âge de 27 ans, il s'établit à son compte. Il établit véritablement sa fortune durant la guerre Iran/Irak dans les années 80, ses tankers récupérant alors le pétrole en prenant certes les plus gros risques... mais en générant des profits colossaux. Comme le décrit son biographe, il fût une véritable bouée de sauvetage permettant de faire face à l' « Ayatollah ».
En décembre 2005, des rumeurs ont circulé selon lesquelles la société SeaDrill contrôlée par Fredriksen aurait pu lier ses intérêts avec ceux de Smedvig. S'en suivit alors une bataille rangée avec la compagnie américaine Noble Corporation. Mais, en janvier 2006, SeaDrill acquiert 50 % de Smedvig, ce qui lui permet de prendre le contrôle de la compagnie, établissant ainsi sa plus grosse transaction depuis sa création.
En juin 2007, le Daily Mail affirmait que Fredriksen pourrait être intéressé par le rachat du club de foot anglais de Tottenham.
S'il s'est lancé depuis peu dans le domaine de l'élevage de poissons, dont il est devenu le leader mondial à la suite d'acquisitions-fusions, cet homme dont la fortune est évaluée à près de 5 milliards d'euros est désormais fermement établi à la tête de Frontline, la plus grosse flotte de superpétroliers au monde, et de SeaDrill, un groupe de services pétroliers propriétaire de plates-formes.
Ces deux groupes, bien qu'enregistrés dans le paradis fiscal des îles Bermudes, sont cotés à la Bourse d'Oslo. Mais en tant que citoyen chypriote, M. Fredriksen profite également de la législation locale qui fait que les droits de succession sont quasiment inexistants tandis qu'en Norvège, ils s'élèveraient dans son cas à 20 % de l'héritage.
