Cofondateur avec Bill Gates de Microsoft, Paul Allen est un passionné d'informatique et de sport. A la tête de son groupe Venture Productions, il multiplie avec brio ses investissements dans des sociétés d'informatique, de nouvelles technologies et du sport. Trois domaines qu'il maîtrise et qui lui ont permis de se hisser à la 57ème place du classement Forbes 2011 avec une Fortune personnelle de 13 milliards de dollars.

C'est sur les bancs de l'école que Paul Allen et Bill Gates se rencontrent. Animés par une même passion de la programmation, ils bidouillent ensemble des programmes et des jeux informatiques.

Paul Allen apprend à l'Université de Washington les secrets de la programmation informatique. Au bout de deux ans, il estime qu'il en sait assez pour commencer à travailler. Il est engagé par une société de domotique de Boston. Mais la société s'avère un trop petit terrain de jeu pour le boulimique d'informatique qu'il est.

Il n'hésite pas une seconde lorsque son ami d'enfance Bill Gates lui propose de s'associer à lui pour vendre de la programmation aux autres. Ensemble, ils fondent Microsoft et mettent au point le premier langage MS Dos qu'ils vendent à partir de 1981 à IBM.

La rémunération par IBM de 35 dollars pour chaque copie permet à Microsoft de se constituer un petit pactole et de faire son entrée en bourse dès 1986. Trois ans auparavant, Paul Allen quitte la direction technique et conserve son poste au conseil d'administration où il reste jusqu'en 2000.

En 1997, Paul Allen fonde Vulcan Productions, une société de production cinématographique. Parallèlement, il investit massivement dans les hautes technologies, les médias et le sport.
