The firm invests across the fixed-income market, including strategies that range from lower risk, enhanced cash, short maturity portfolios to core bond portfolios that offer a greater range of allowed security sections and longer average portfolio maturity. SeaCap manages fixed-income portfolios across all maturity ranges. SeaCap's taxable bond approach focuses on adding value to a portfolio by stressing factors that are both important and predictable in creating competitive fixed-income returns and controlling the risk of factors that are important but unpredictable. The firm's investment process is based on a 3-part strategy: yield plus, sector selection and maturity adjustment. Their strategy allows them to achieve clients' objectives with appropriate levels of risk. SeaCap seeks to add incremental yield to a portfolio, on a credit-adjusted basis, as a way to achieve higher returns. They create a core portfolio of undervalued securities that provides higher yield commensurate with the client's quality requirements. SeaCap believes that sector selection is a relatively predictable way to add value. The firm seeks to identify the best investment value among the four major bond sectors and to overweight the sectors that offer the potential for relative price gains. They analyze the value of sectors based on five criteria: (1) fundamental analysis of the economy and the outlook of the sector (2) the fundamental outlook of the sector (3) the optionality of the sector (4) supply and demand relationships of the sector and (5) current versus historical spreads. SeaCap limits changes in the duration of portfolios relative to the target index. They achieve lower volatility by managing interest rate risk through systematic maturity adjustments. The firm limits the magnitude of maturity decisions to within +/- 20% of the target index for their intermediate and core portfolios. SeaCap also analyzes the relative value of fixed-income securities versus alternative investments as a way to make decisions regarding duration rather than relying on interest forecasts. Duration is different from the target index only when bonds appear to be significantly misvalued. The firm's municipal bond investment approach seeks add incremental yield to a portfolio, on a credit-adjusted basis, as the means to achieving higher returns. SeaCap seeks to purchase bonds at yields better than the yields that are generally available in the retail bond market. They can do by purchasing bonds at institutional yields through what is essentially a quantity discount. SeaCap buys larger institutional size blocks of bonds and allocates them among accounts so that clients receive an institutional yield instead of a retail yield. The firm also continually bids on bonds that have been put out for bid by brokers. Bonds can often be purchased this way at yields better than those generally available in the market. SeaCap avoids investments in municipal bond sectors that have had default problems in the past including non-rated bonds, healthcare-related bonds and single purpose bonds. The firm seeks to maintain a portfolio's average maturity at about 5 years, although the average maturity will shorten over time. If it has shortened, the firm will take advantage of times when tax-exempt bond yields appear to be high to lengthen the portfolio's average maturity to somewhat longer than five years.
