Homme d'affaires texan, Thomas Boone Pickens est à la tête de BP Capital Management, un fond alternatif spécialisé dans les énergies comme le pétrole, le gaz, le nucléaire et plus récemment, l'eau.
Livreur de journaux à l'âge de 12 ans, Pickens quitte l'Oklahoma lorsque ses parents, tous deux employés de l'industrie pétrolière, déménagent à Amarillo au Texas en 1930.
Diplôme en géologie de l'Université A&M d'Oklahoma en 1951, Pickens est employé par Philips Petroleum jusqu'en 1954. En 1956, il fonde Mesa Petroleum.
La première acquisition de Mesa Petroleum est simplement spectaculaire, puisque Pickens a réussi à racheter Hugoton Production Compagny, une société d'une taille 30 fois supérieure à Mesa Petroleum. Dès lors, Pickens a bâti sa stratégie de développement sur des OPA audacieuses et le plus souvent hostiles.
Très populaire, il n'hésite jamais à dénoncer les abus des P-DG des grandes entreprises qui ne se soucient, selon lui, que de leur propre portefeuille. Il a ainsi réussi à fédérer autour de lui les petits porteurs dans un groupe devenu lobby.
En 1997, Pickens fonde BP Capital Management (qui s'appelait alors BP Energy Fund), qui gère deux fonds spéculatifs engagés dans des sociétés d'énergie traditionnelles comme le pétrole, le gaz naturel et l'énergie nucléaire. Pickens détient 46% du groupe.
En 2006, persuadé que l'eau finira par remplacer le pétrole comme énergie renouvelable, Pickens investit massivement dans des terrains au Texas riches en nappes aquifères.
Le 8 Juillet 2008, T. Boone Pickens, ex magnat du pétrole converti dans les énergies propres, propose la création d'un plan fédéral des énergies alternatives. Un plan de 150 milliards de dollars sur dix ans qui permettrait de produire de l'électricité pour 1,3 millions de foyers américains.
