Carlos Antunes Tavares est né le 14 août 1958 à Lisbonne. C’est un chef d'entreprise portugais. Il est connu pour être à la tête du Groupe PSA, après avoir passé des années à la direction de Renault.
Passionné de course automobile et pilote amateur, il est diplômé de l’Ecole Centrale de Paris.
En 1981, il entre chez Renault et occupe divers postes à responsabilités. D’abord ingénieur d’essais à Aubevoye, il pilote la conception de la Mégane 2 (programme X84) et l'industrialisation de ses dérivés. Il gravit les échelons petit à petit et en 2004, il rejoint le groupe Nissan comme patron pour la zone Amériques où il siège au conseil d'administration.
En 2011, il est nommé directeur général délégué aux opérations de Renault. Il devient ainsi le "numéro 2" du groupe après le président, Carlos Ghosn. En 2013, cependant, faute de perspective pour devenir numéro 1 chez Renault-Nissan, il préfère annoncer son départ. Son objectif est de diriger un grand groupe automobile et il pense le président indétrônable.
Le 1er janvier 2014, il rejoint le Directoire du Groupe PSA où il occupe les fonctions de président depuis le 31 mars. Il est notamment chargé de la relance économique et stratégique du groupe.
"Back in the race", soit "de retour dans la course" : c'est le nom que Carlos Tavares donne à son plan de redressement de PSA. Son objectif est de regagner une croissance durable et organique, sans aide extérieure. Grâce à son plan, l'entreprise a changé son organisation interne et, en moins de deux ans, PSA s'est désendetté et a retrouvé une marge de 5%.
En 2016, l'assainissement du groupe est réalisé, dans un marché européen favorable. L’objectif de Carlos Tavares reste cependant de définir une stratégie de groupe, notamment dans la recherche de nouveaux marchés. En mars 2017, PSA rachète le constructeur allemand Opel au groupe américain General Motors.
En 2018, le patron de PSA annonce un bénéfice net historique en hausse de 47% pour le groupe qu'il préside. Il crée un nouveau plan qu’il nomme "Push to pass", soit "appuyer pour dépasser" : ce nouveau plan prend la suite de "Back in the race". Carlos Tavares veut libérer le potentiel de l'entreprise en lançant 28 nouveaux modèles en Europe dans les six ans à venir. Peugeot se porte bien, mais l’objectif est aujourd’hui de relancer Citroën et de réussir le lancement de la nouvelle marque DS dans l'univers du luxe automobile.
