Cathie Duddy Wood commence sa carrière chez Capital Group en 1977 grâce à l’aide de son mentor de l’époque Arthur Laffer. Après trois années en tant qu’économiste adjointe, elle déménage en 1980 à New York pour travailler chez Jennison Associates en tant qu’économiste en chef, puis analyste financier et gestionnaire de portefeuille. Elle était chargée des sociétés de publication de données financières telles que Reuters ou Telerate, ce genre de sociétés difficiles à analyser dont personne ne voulait. Pourtant, ce sont bien ces entreprises qui ont compris, les premières, l’avènement d’Internet et comment l’exploiter. C’est à ce moment-là qu'elle s’est rendue compte que “l’innovation est bien souvent sous-estimée” parce que nombreux sont ceux qui négligent à quel point “la croissance peut-être exponentielle”. Ce changement de paradigme a agi en elle comme un catalyseur à sa pensée disruptive.
Quelques années avant la bulle des dotcoms et après 21 ans de carrière, elle confonde alors avec Lulu C. Wang le fonds spéculatif Tupelo Capital Management. Mais ce fut un échec en pleine crise internet de 2000. Elle rejoint alors AllianceBernstein en 2001 en tant que directrice des investissements. Cela l’a amené à gérer ses premiers milliards (5 milliards sous gestion) pendant près de 12 ans. Elle est critiqué pour ses faibles performances durant la première décennie du XXIème siècle, notamment durant la crise financière des subprimes en 2007-2008.
Après le rejet de son idée chez AllianceBernstein en 2013, elle décide de lancer son propre fonds basé sur l’innovation disruptive sur la base d’un constat simple : l’innovation est sous-évaluée. Wood quitte la société et fonde ainsi Ark Investment en 2014. Elle lance quatre fonds grâce aux capitaux de Bill Hwang de chez Archegos Capital.
L’aisance de la néo-prêtresse de Wall Street à suivre son intuition l’a aidée à faire d’Ark Investment Management l’une des sociétés d’investissement les plus performantes et à la croissance la plus rapide au monde de 2016 à 2020. Cathie Wood est devenue une véritable popstar de l'investissement aux Etats-Unis. Elle doit cette success story à ses résultats plus qu’impressionnants sur les valeurs tech principalement américaines en 2020 suite au rebond post-coronavirus.
Symbole du "think different" américain, elle a su attirer les regards par ses placements risqués mais bien sentis, comme sa large position dans Tesla, Roku et le Bitcoin. Sa stratégie d'investissement vise à obtenir une croissance du capital à un horizon de temps 5 ans en investissant dans des sociétés axées sur l’innovation de rupture, principalement aux États-Unis.
Elle définit l'"innovation de rupture" comme l'introduction d'un produit ou d'un service technologique susceptible de changer la façon dont le monde fonctionne. Les entreprises de la stratégie de base d'Ark visent à tirer des avantages substantiels des nouveaux produits ou services associés à la recherche scientifique sur les technologies innovantes. Parmi les thématiques abordées, nous retrouvons l'intelligence artificielle, les véhicules autonomes, la fintech, le séquençage ADN, la robotique, les imprimantes 3D, etc.
