Jean-François Hénin est le Président de Maurel et Prom, compagnie spécialisée dans l'extraction de pétrole et de gaz naturel, principalement au Congo et en Colombie. Classé dans les 100 premières plus grosses fortunes de France par le magazine Challenges, Jean-François Hénin détient via son holding personnel près de 25% de cette compagnie d'exploration et de production pétrolière.
Diplômé en droit et sciences économiques ainsi que de l'Institut d'administration des entreprises (IAE) de Paris, Jean-François Hénin débute sa carrière en 1970 en tant que trésorier assistant chez Bull avant de passer un an plus tard chez Pechiney, qu'il quitte à son tour pour travailler successivement pour Carnation (1972-79), la Société lyonnaise de dépôts (1979-82), puis Thomson CSF.
Fin limier de la finance, Jean-François Hénin fait partie des rares analystes à avoir prévu la chute du dollar en 1987. Sa maîtrise financière lui vaut le surnom du « Mozart de la finance ».
En 1990 : Thomson CSF cède sa filiale financière baptisée Altus Finance au Crédit lyonnais. Mais trois ans plus tard, JF Hénin est évincé d'Altus Finance par le nouveau directeur du Crédit lyonnais, Jean Peyrelevade.
Initialement gérant de Maurel & Prom, Jean-François Hénin devient Président du Directoire fin 2004, lors de la transformation de la Société en Société Anonyme.
