Peabody Energy Corporation est un producteur de charbon qui fournit des produits essentiels à la production d'énergie fiable et d'acier. La société possède des intérêts dans des mines de charbon situées aux États-Unis et en Australie, y compris des intérêts dans Middlemount Coal Pty Ltd. Elle commercialise le charbon auprès d'autres producteurs de charbon et en assure le courtage, et négocie des contrats de transport de charbon et de fret. Les secteurs de la société comprennent l'exploitation minière thermique en mer, l'exploitation minière métallurgique en mer, l'exploitation minière dans le bassin de la rivière Powder, l'exploitation minière thermique aux États-Unis et les activités de la société et autres. Les activités du segment Seaborne Thermal Mining consistent en des mines situées en Nouvelle-Galles du Sud, en Australie. Les mines de ce segment utilisent des procédés d'extraction à la fois en surface et souterrains pour extraire du charbon thermique à faible teneur en soufre et à haute teneur en Btu. Le segment Seaborne Metallurgical Mining comprend des mines dans le Queensland, en Australie, une en Nouvelle-Galles du Sud, en Australie et une en Alabama, aux États-Unis. La société possède la partie sud de la concession de Wards Well.
