Figure incontournable du paysage industriel, Carlos Ghosn serait selon plusieurs magazines (Financial Times, Fortune) l’un des dirigeants les plus influents de la planète. Souvent affublé de toutes sortes de surnoms : « Cost Killer », « Icebreaker », « le Martien »... Pour sa part, Carlos Ghosn se définit comme un « praticien de la multinationalité ».
Petit-fils d’un libanais maronite ayant émigré dès l’âge de 13 ans au Brésil, Carlos Ghosn entend parler français, portugais et libanais dès sa plus tendre enfance. Lorsqu’il a six ans, sa famille quitte le Brésil et le place dans un collège jésuite au Liban pour poursuivre ses études secondaires. Il expliquera plus tard que cette école lui a donné le goût du défi et de la compétitivité. A son arrivée à Paris, il entre à l’Ecole Polytechnique, puis ensuite à celle des Mines.
Carlos Ghosn débute dans le monde professionnel au sein du groupe Michelin en 1978. Trois ans plus tard, il devient directeur de l’usine du Puy et à partir de 1984 est en charge de la R&D pour les pneumatiques de chantiers et agricoles. Le groupe exploite bientôt ses talents de polyglotte (il maîtrise le français, l’anglais et le portugais, est capable de rédiger ou parler l’espagnol, l’arabe, l’italien et apprend le japonais) en le nommant responsable des opérations en Amérique du Sud, lui donnant l’occasion de retourner au Brésil. En 1989, il est nommé directeur des opérations de la firme clermontoise en Amérique du Nord, c’est à ce poste qu’il se distingue l’année suivante en favorisant la fusion de Michelin Amérique du Nord avec Uniroyal Goodrich Tire Co.
En 1996, il rejoint le groupe Renault au poste de directeur adjoint, en charge de l’activité, de la recherche, de l’ingénierie, de la production et des achats du groupe dans le Mercosur. Trois ans plus tard, il gère la prise de participation de Renault dans Nissan. Le groupe japonais en grande difficulté est jugé alors par beaucoup d’observateurs comme irrécupérable. En 1999, Ghosn présente son NRP (Nissan Revival Plan - le plan de renaissance de Nissan) et en 2003, la dette du constructeur de Yokohama est entièrement remboursée, tandis que son bénéfice net progresse de 33%. Renault injecte 5 milliards de dollars et récolte aujourd’hui 44.4% des profits et des dividendes de Nissan, devenu un des groupes d’automobile les plus rentables au monde avec une marge opérationnelle de plus de 11%.
En avril 2005, Carlos Ghosn succède à Louis Schweitzer au poste de PDG de Renault, assurant la présidence exécutive du groupe. Le 6 mai 2009, il lui succédera également comme président du Conseil d’administration. Son plan de relance « Renault Contrat 2009 » visant la vente de 800 000 véhicules supplémentaires et le lancement de 26 nouveaux modèles en quatre ans ne peut se réaliser, en particulier à cause de la crise financière.
En novembre 2018, il a été arrêté par la justice japonaise pour malversations financières (dissimulation de revenus dans les publications financières de Nissan et utilisation des fonds de l'entreprise à des fins personnelles). Après plusieurs mois d'emprisonnement, il a quitté le Japon sans autorisation en décembre 2019, pour rejoindre le Liban.
