Pendant 40 ans, Stanley Ho, appelé également Ho Hung-sun a régné en maitre absolu sur le secteur du jeu à Hong Kong et à Macao. Grâce au monopole consenti par les autorités dans les années soixante, il a amassé une fortune avec son groupe Sociedade de Jogos de Macau.

Stanley Ho a grandi dans une illustre famille, une de ces dynasties qui faisait la pluie et le beau temps sur Hong Kong. A 13 ans, un crash boursier entraine la faillite de sa famille. Très affecté mais combatif, il décide que seules des études pourraient lui ouvrir la porte du succès pour rebâtir ce qui s'est écroulé sous ses yeux. Il décroche alors une bourse à l'université de Hong Kong où il étudiera l'anglais, le japonais et le portugais.

Au début des années soixante, son beau père, alors très influent, lui obtient le monopole du jeu à Macao. En quelques années, le patrimoine de Stanley le hisse en première place des hommes les plus riches d'Asie. A Hong Kong, il investit massivement dans le tourisme et les infrastructures.

Cette implication contribue fortement au 27% de croissance affichée par Hong Kong en 2002. Mais 2002 est aussi l'année où le monopole sur le jeu détenu par Stanley Ho prend fin. En1999, le Portugal rétrocède Macao à la Chine et le gouvernement chinois ouvre le marché du jeu aux investisseurs étrangers. Au début, l'arrivée massive d'entrepreneurs américains, déterminés à faire un deuxième Las Vegas en Extrême Orient n'a en rien perturbé les affaires du roi du jeu. Bien au contraire, sa connaissance de l'univers des casinos et son réseau d'influence lui permettent de faire des plus values encore plus spectaculaires.

En 2007, Stanley Ho qui détient 40% du marché des jeux construit une tour de 52 étages, histoire d'envoyer un signal fort aux nouveaux arrivants. Mais certains promoteurs refusent de se laisser impressionner à l'instar de Las Vegas Sands group, propriété de Sheldon Adelson qui grignote chaque jour un peu plus le territoire de Stanley Ho.

A 85 ans, il n'est pas sûr que « l'homme qui transforme les rêves en réalité » comme le surnomment les Hongkongais puisse repousser longtemps les assauts des entrepreneurs américains. Alors que les autorités de Macao viennent de donner un coup de frein à l'expansion des casinos, l'empire de Stanley Ho semble plus que jamais menacé.
