Le Dr Sands était auparavant employé en tant que président de l'Education Success Foundation, Inc. et cofondateur de The Festival Network LLC. Richard Desmond est né dans le nord de Londres dans une famille juive. Après quelques années au Christ's College de Finchley, il quitte l'école à 14 ans. Son premier emploi fut pour Thomson Newspapers. Il devient ensuite batteur au sein de groupe de jazz et de rock puis travaille dans le vestiaire d'un club. Sa passion se concrétise le jour où il crée un magazine de musique. Il a alors 22 ans.

En 1974, il fonde Northern & Shell qui publie notamment les magazines Ok!, lancé en 1993, Daily Star, Daily Express et Sunday Express. Jusqu'en 2004, son groupe publiait également de nombreux titres pornographiques. Afin de remodeler son image, il a vendu ses titres pour adultes à la société britannique Remnant Media en Février 2004.

C'est en 1983 que Northen & Shell obtient sa licence pour publier Penthouse au Royaume-Uni. Suivront une série de films pornographiques. Northen & Shell possède des chaines de télévision pour adultes, notamment Télévision X et Red Hot TV. En juillet 2010, il rachète la cinquième chaine gratuite anglaise, lancée en 1997 et rebaptisée Channel five en 2002.

Desmond est un partisan actif de la bienfaisance pour enfants. Il est devenu président de la fondation caritative Norwood en 2006.
